Brookgreen Gardens is easily one of the most magical portrait locations on the Grand Strand. With mossy live oaks, curated flower beds (hello, tulip season!), fountains, and sculptures around every turn, it’s no wonder so many people want to take photos there!
But here’s the deal: Brookgreen Gardens is private property, and they have some pretty strict rules when it comes to photography, especially if you’re working with a photographer. That means no, you can’t just show up and snap away (even with a “quick” engagement or family session).
Most people don’t realize that these rules are in place, so be sure to keep scrolling to learn more if you have been considering photographing or being photographed at Brookgreen. Nothing would be worse than being escorted out by the safety department mid-session!

If you’re hiring a photographer or working as one, this guide lays out everything you need to know before setting foot on the grounds.
Can I Be Photographed At Brookgreen Gardens?
The Short Answer: Yes, But You Must Book Ahead
If you’re hiring a professional photographer, or you are one, you’ll need to schedule your session directly through Brookgreen’s Events Department.
Here’s what you need to know upfront:
- Sessions must be booked and paid in full at least two weeks in advance
- They’re only available Monday-Friday from 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM
- The photo shoot fee is $250 for up to 1.5 hours and 6 total people
- A Brookgreen representative will accompany your group the entire time
Yes, you’ll have a chaperone. And yes, they really do stick to their policies. Their safety department is strict, and they will shut down your session mid-shoot if you didn’t follow the rules. The comfort of their visitors guests and the protection of their property is more important to them than a photoshoot. (As it should be!)

What The Photography Fee Includes
The photo shoot fee gets you:
- Access to photograph in designated garden areas (no specific spots guaranteed)
- Admission for up to six people (including your photographer, if they’re not a Brookgreen member)
- A Brookgreen staff escort to guide you through the session
At the time of this writing, the photo shoot fee is $250.
Keep in mind: you’re paying for access, not privacy. The gardens will still be open to regular guests, and your session must stay out of the way of other visitors.
What Kinds Of Sessions Are Allowed at Brookgreen?
Brookgreen welcomes certain types of portrait sessions, as long as they’re properly scheduled.
Here’s how it breaks down:
Family + Individual Portraits
Family sessions, senior portraits, and headshots are welcome with advance booking. This is an amazing spot for those who want something a little more timeless or upscale than your typical beach session.
Photographers, make sure both you and your clients know they can NOT bring props, easels, or large setups. Pets are also not allowed in the gardens. Keep it simple and be respectful of the space.
Proposals
Brookgreen Gardens was named one of the most romantic gardens in the Southeast, so it’s no surprise that it’s become a favorite spot for proposals! The sweeping oaks, quiet paths, and stunning sculpture gardens make it a dream setting to pop the question.
But here’s the catch: you can’t just show up with a photographer and wing it.
From their website: “If you would like to make special arrangements for your proposal, please contact our Events Department. Proposal appointments must be booked and paid in full at least two weeks prior to the scheduled date.”
It’s also important to note that proposals (along with any other type of professional photo session) can NOT be booked during special events, such as Nights of a Thousand Candles and Summer Light: Art by Night.
Bottom line: If you want that Pinterest-worthy proposal moment, plan ahead.

Engagement & Couples Sessions
Engagement photos are definitely allowed with a proper booking and honestly, the setting couldn’t be more romantic!
Just remember:
- No weekend sessions
- No sunset sessions
- No pets
- No drones
- No surprise shoots, your photographer needs to be on the books

Bridal Portraits
Brookgreen is the most incredible place for a truly spectacular southern bridal portrait! It offers a classic, romantic backdrop that perfectly captures the elegance and charm of a southern bride.
However, this is where it gets tricky.

Even if you’re obsessed with the setting, you can’t book bridal portraits here unless your actual wedding is taking place at Brookgreen. That rule is firm, and enforced.

Prom Photography
During prom season, members may come in and take photos at no additional charge. Non-members must purchase regular admission tickets.
No photo shoot fee and no assistance is available. Only during regular business hours.
Sessions Not Allowed (No Exceptions)
- Any session during special events, including:
- Nights of a Thousand Candles
- Summer Light: Art by Night
- Mini sessions with multiple clients back-to-back
- Any commercial or promotional use of Brookgreen’s sculptures (without written permission from their marketing department)
- Drone photography
- Sessions that block paths, use props, or enter plant beds
- Pets are not allowed in Brookgreen gardens.
Basically, if it disrupts the guest experience or risks damaging the grounds or artwork… it’s a no.
Why So Many Rules?
Brookgreen Gardens isn’t just a park, it’s a nationally recognized nonprofit and National Historic Landmark, home to an extraordinary collection of original sculptures and meticulously preserved gardens.
Many sculptures are copyrighted, which means using them in your advertising or portfolio without written permission is legally risky. These policies are in place to protect the art and the environment, not to be difficult.

TL;DR: Follow the Rules, It’s 100% Worth It
Brookgreen Gardens isn’t just a beautiful location, it’s a true Lowcountry treasure. The grounds are thoughtfully maintained, the staff is professional and helpful, and the entire experience reflects the care and intention behind this historic space.
Yes, the rules are strict. But they’re there to protect an extraordinary place that continues to inspire artists, families, and couples alike. If you’re willing to plan ahead and work within their guidelines, you’ll walk away with an unforgettable experience and some seriously stunning portraits!
